Used For:

  • Acne vulgaris

How it Works:

  • Clindamycin: A lincosamide antibacterial that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, reducing acne-causing bacteria.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide: An oxidizing agent with bactericidal and keratolytic effects; the precise mechanism of action is unknown.


Usage and Safety

Dosage:
As directed by the physician; applied topically to affected areas.

Side Effects:

  • Mild local irritation

  • Headache

  • Reports of diarrhoea and colitis (discontinue immediately)

Drug Interactions:

  • Avoid with erythromycin-containing products (possible antagonism with clindamycin).

  • Clindamycin may enhance the action of neuromuscular blocking agents — use with caution.

  • Avoid concurrent use with tretinoin, isotretinoin, tazarotene (may reduce efficacy and increase irritation) — if combination is needed, apply at different times (e.g., morning vs. evening).

  • Avoid combining with topical sulphonamide-containing products — may cause temporary yellow/orange skin or hair discolouration.

Indication:
Topical treatment of acne vulgaris.

When Not to Use:

  • Hypersensitivity to lincomycin, clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide, or formulation components.

  • Patients with history of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated colitis (including pseudomembranous colitis).

Precautions:

  • Avoid contact with mouth, eyes, lips, mucous membranes, or broken/irritated skin; rinse with water if accidental contact occurs.


Warnings

  1. Concomitant acne therapy caution — may cause severe cumulative irritation, especially with peeling or abrasive agents.

  2. Severe irritation (erythema, dryness, itching, stinging/burning) — discontinue use immediately.

  3. Photosensitivity — avoid sunlamps and prolonged sun exposure; use sunscreen and protective clothing if outdoors.
