Used For: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Acute Gouty Arthritis, Acute Pain, Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain, Primary Dysmenorrhea, Moderate to Severe Acute Post-Operative Pain (Dental or Abdominal Gynecological Surgery).

How it Works:
Etoricoxib is a selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor that reduces prostanoid mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever while minimizing gastrointestinal toxicity and platelet effects compared to non-selective NSAIDs.

Dosage: As prescribed by the physician, based on condition severity.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Alveolar osteitis, edema, dizziness, headache, palpitations, arrhythmia, hypertension, bronchospasm, GI disturbances (constipation, flatulence, gastritis, acid reflux, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting), abnormal liver enzymes, ecchymosis, fatigue, flu-like symptoms.

  • Uncommon: Infections, blood disorders, hypersensitivity, appetite changes, weight gain, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, insomnia, sensory disturbances, vision/ear disorders, cardiovascular events (atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, angina), cerebrovascular events, respiratory issues, bowel changes, skin reactions, musculoskeletal pain, renal issues, hyperkalemia, uric acid increase.

  • Rare: Severe allergic reactions, confusion, hepatitis, hepatic failure, jaundice, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fixed drug eruption, hyponatremia.

Drug Interactions: Oral anticoagulants, diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II antagonists, acetylsalicylic acid, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, lithium, methotrexate, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, digoxin, sulfotransferases, rifampicin.

When Not to Use: Hypersensitivity, active peptic ulcer or GI bleeding, NSAID/aspirin-induced allergic reactions, severe liver dysfunction, severe renal impairment, children <16 years, inflammatory bowel disease, uncontrolled hypertension, congestive heart failure, established cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease.

Precautions:

  • Use cautiously in elderly patients or those at GI risk.

  • Avoid in high cardiovascular risk patients unless benefits outweigh risks.

  • Not a substitute for aspirin in cardiovascular prophylaxis.

  • Monitor renal function in at-risk patients.

Warnings:

  1. Assess cardiovascular risk before prescribing.

  2. Maintain other antiplatelet therapy if indicated.

  3. Monitor renal function in compromised patients.
