Detail Description

Betnovate-N Ointment 20G – Specification

Requires Prescription: Yes

Generics:

  • Betamethasone Valerate

  • Neomycin Sulphate

Used For:

  • Eczema

  • Other steroid-responsive dermatoses with secondary bacterial infection

How it Works:

  • Betamethasone Valerate: A potent topical corticosteroid that rapidly reduces inflammation and itching in steroid-responsive dermatoses, and is often effective in less responsive conditions like psoriasis.

  • Neomycin Sulphate: A broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic that targets most bacteria commonly involved in skin infections.

Usage & Safety

Dosage: As directed by the physician. Apply a thin layer to the affected area, usually 1–2 times daily.

Side Effects:

  • Local hypersensitivity

  • Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression

  • Cushingoid features (moon face, central obesity)

  • Delayed weight gain/growth retardation in children

  • Osteoporosis

  • Glaucoma

  • Hyperglycaemia/glucosuria

  • Cataract

  • Hypertension

  • Increased weight/obesity

  • Decreased endogenous cortisol levels

Drug Interactions:

  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, itraconazole)

  • Neomycin sulphate (risk of ototoxicity/nephrotoxicity if absorbed systemically)

Indication:

  • Relief of inflammatory and pruritic symptoms in steroid-responsive dermatoses complicated by bacterial infection.

When Not to Use:

  • Children under 2 years of age

  • Large area or prolonged use where significant systemic absorption is possible

  • Known hypersensitivity to any component

  • Risk of neomycin-related ototoxicity or nephrotoxicity

Precautions:

  • Occlusive dressings can encourage bacterial infection in warm, moist skin folds; cleanse skin before applying a fresh dressing.

Warnings:

  1. Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to betamethasone, neomycin, or any excipient.

  2. Discontinue if prolonged/significant diarrhoea or abdominal cramps occur.

  3. Children may absorb proportionally more corticosteroid than adults, increasing the risk of systemic side effects.

Pregnancy Category:

  • Always consult a physician before use during pregnancy.

Storage:

  • Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
