How it works:
Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic (“friendly germ”) used to treat diarrheal illnesses, maintain normal bowel function, and promote intestinal health. It helps restore normal bowel flora, inhibits harmful bacteria growth, stimulates local immunity, and promotes water reabsorption in the colon.
Usage and Safety

Dosage: Saccharomyces boulardii (as per physician’s recommendation)

Side Effects:

Rare: Fungemia, serious allergic reactions (rash, swelling, severe dizziness, breathing difficulty)

Uncommon: Constipation, flatulence, bloating, increased thirst

Drug Interactions:
Systemic antifungals (fluconazole, itraconazole, terbinafine) reduce efficacy — avoid concomitant use.
Indications:

Treatment & prevention of diarrhea (including rota-viral diarrhea in children)

Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (including Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea and recurrent colitis)

When not to use:

Immunocompromised patients

GI wall perforation

Allergy to yeast or yeast-based products

Patients on systemic antifungals

Critically ill patients or those with central venous catheters
Precautions:

Rare risk of Saccharomyces fungemia, especially in critically ill or immunocompromised patients, or those with central lines

Increased environmental risk in ICU due to air contamination when opening sachets
Warnings:

Avoid use in critical care settings without strict infection control

Do not use if allergic to yeast

Not a standalone treatment for C. difficile — must be combined with recommended antibiotics
