Generic Name: Alfacalcidol

Used For: Osteoporosis, bone disorders, and calcium regulation

How it Works:
Alfacalcidol increases vitamin D levels in the body, which in turn raises calcium and phosphate levels, supporting bone strength and mineralization.


Indications:

Used to treat conditions where calcium balance needs adjustment, including:

  • Bone changes due to kidney failure (renal osteodystrophy)

  • Parathyroid gland disorders:

    • Hyperparathyroidism (high calcium)

    • Hypoparathyroidism (low calcium)

  • Low calcium in newborns (hypocalcaemia)

  • Rickets or osteomalacia (softening/deformity of bones due to lack of calcium)


Dosage:

As prescribed by a healthcare professional, based on patient condition and calcium/phosphate levels.


Side Effects:

Common (up to 1 in 10):

  • Weakness, muscle or bone pain

  • Frequent urination

  • Increased thirst

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite

  • Excessive sweating

  • Headache

  • Confusion, drowsiness

Uncommon (up to 1 in 100):

  • Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, constipation

  • Muscle pain

  • Fatigue

  • Calcinosis (calcium deposits in tissues)

  • Feeling generally unwell


Drug Interactions:

  • Anticonvulsants (barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, primidone)

  • Cardiac glycosides (digoxin)

  • Thiazide diuretics ("water pills")

  • Magnesium-containing antacids

  • Aluminium-containing medicines

  • Cholestyramine


When Not to Use:

Do not take if:

  • Allergic to alfacalcidol or any ingredients

  • You have hypercalcaemia (high calcium in blood)

  • You have calcification (calcium deposits in body tissues)


Precautions:

  • Regular blood tests are essential, especially in children, kidney patients, or high-dose therapy

  • Use cautiously in granulomas or sarcoidosis (may increase sensitivity to alfacalcidol)

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use


Warnings:

  1. May cause dizziness — avoid driving or operating machinery if affected.

  2. Monitor calcium and phosphate levels regularly.

  3. Use with caution in chronic health conditions affecting calcium metabolism.
